Desire in Life: A Thought-Provoking Jewelry Collection by Jiangang He

Exploring the Relationship Between Desire and Life Through Unique Jewelry Designs

Jiangang He's award-winning jewelry collection, Desire in Life, challenges wearers to reflect on their desires and life's other meanings. Inspired by wealth, power, and life, the collection uses unique properties and innovative design techniques to create a thought-provoking narrative.

The Desire in Life series draws its inspiration from the designer's reflections on the relationship between desire and life. Representing wealth and power through diamonds and gems, and life through skull, sternum, and ribs, the collection encourages wearers to contemplate their pursuit of desires and life's other meanings.

What sets this collection apart is its creative application of stereo sculpture to create skeletal shapes. The series includes a diamond ring in the shape of a skull, a triangular structure formed by ribs, and a necklace with a red jewel inlaid in a three-dimensional sternum. Each piece is a unique representation of different desires - wealth, passion, and power. Part of the series uses 18K black gold, adding a layer of satire to the designer's contemplation of "desire for life".

The realization of this design involved a combination of art sculpture and jewelry making. The line of the jewelry is smooth and full of tension, achieved through the use of semi-realistic wax molds to carve out human bones, ribs, and other skeletal shapes. The materials used include 18K black gold, 18K platinum, diamonds, and a red gem, each contributing to the overall theme of the collection.

The interaction of the design is as thought-provoking as its creation. The skull-shaped diamond ring abstractly presents a person holding a diamond, symbolizing a desire for wealth. The triangular structure ring formed by intersecting ribs represents interdependence passions, while the necklace with a heart-shaped red jewel inlaid in a stereo chest rib symbolizes the desire for power. The punk aesthetic of the collection, highlighted by the use of 18K black gold, invites viewers to reflect on the theme of "desire and life".

The Desire in Life series was conceived and completed in Shanghai, China, between July 2018 and March 2019. It was released in China in June 2019. The design process involved extensive research on contemporary art in jewelry design, emotional resonance in jewelry design, innovative use of 18K metal materials, and three-dimensional sculpture technology. The designer's study found that combining philosophical thinking with jewelry design can elevate jewelry from a single wearing function to an expression of emotional resonance.

The collection faced several challenges, including arousing the viewer's emotional resonance and accurately representing the shape of the bones. The designer overcame these challenges through careful consideration of design style, styling, and material use, and by using design elements reasonably and appropriately. The Desire in Life series was awarded Silver in A' Jewelry, Eyewear, and Watch Design Award in 2020, a testament to its creative and professional excellence.
